Jeremiah 14:14 Then the Lord said to me, “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries and the delusions of their own minds.

You know, we are really a strange bunch of creatures, we will not admit our mistakes until it is too little too late. Only those who walk with the Lord closely will ever come to know their errors earlier and stop their tracks from going any further to prevent any mishaps from occurring in their lives.

Ladies and gentlemen, the book of Jeremiah has a lot to inform us. At this juncture at chapter 14, the scripture laid out the barrenness of the land with cracked grounds and absence of plants to feed the wild animals as the obvious marks of calamity that have hit the people who have disobeyed God. It is so bad that even the doe has chosen to neglect their fawns because there is no grass to feed them.

Jeremiah 14 New International Version

4 The ground is cracked

    because there is no rain in the land;

the farmers are dismayed

    and cover their heads.

5 Even the doe in the field

    deserts her newborn fawn

    because there is no grass.

6 Wild donkeys stand on the barren heights

    and pant like jackals;

their eyes fail

    for lack of food.”

Ladies and gentlemen, the scripture also described that the donkey’s sight has become blurred due to lack of food to feed itself. Have you experienced such hunger to a point where you’re disoriented with your visions blurred? It is such a unique experience that one will never forget and for an animal to experience such and to be able to describe so, it must be close to the point of fainting for the donkey which God was able to vividly explain to Jeremiah. But how do I know about the blurry vision when one is hit with extreme starvation? This author has experienced so and it is not a pretty sight to be in, more so in the modern day life like the 21st century.

Jeremiah 14 also showed why God has asked Jeremiah to not even pray for those people who are suffering now because of their past mistakes. They’ve walked out on the Lord on so many occasions and only now would return to His side pleading for help.

If not for these desperate times such as those jolly good times, they have conveniently forgotten the Lord and sought instead to listen to false prophets who only declared about the good times which will last forever and ever. It’s no different from the prosperity gospel of today or the fair weather forecasts from the cults where no disasters will ever touch them.

13 But I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! The prophets keep telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine. Indeed, I will give you lasting peace in this place.’”

14 Then the Lord said to me, “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries and the delusions of their own minds.

Friends, we ought to realise that the world operates with certain principles and cycles that cannot escape from its highs and lows. Economic cycles follow the same and so are the production cycles of organisations that go through it. Even families have their challenges from one time to another. The only exception is when God allows you to live a life on His terms where He will shield you from all these traumas. But still, when you’re under the protection of the one true God, it is not a “prosperity gospel” all the way. And so if you have come across a priest or a preacher telling you that life can be wholly awesome devoid of accidents and tragic losses, you’d better think again because a lifelong teachings of falsehood and fake gospels might just be on the cards for you. And if that is what you’ve been listening to, it begs for you to wake up and quickly move on and seek help elsewhere.

From the scripture of Jeremiah 14, the people in Judah and Jerusalem have finally come to a point where they can no longer endure the pain of the parched land and dry water cisterns. There were no longer the supplies that could fill their lives and though defiant as they were, right at this point, they began asking God to remember them, pray for them and rescue them.

For me personally, I have walked on that path where God has also blessed me so well that I have begun walking far from Him. I have gone so far to a point where it was rather embarrassing to even recall some of the foolish steps I’ve taken. Even more frightening was how easily I had forgotten that at one time, I could not even fend for myself to pay for petrol to go home and ended up sleeping in the office for two weeks. I did that to conserve my money so I’ll have enough to eat during the “drought and famine” of my life. And this drought my friend went on more than just that two weeks, it was about three whole years!

We humans probably have amnesia hard wired to us that allows us to so easily forget God. How I wish it is not so. But because God is magnanimous, He gave us the liberty of option and the preference to choose what works for us and what doesn’t.

Oftentimes, it is also during such prosperous and joyful moments when we will just cast God aside. The sound of laughter and celebration will often drown out god’s voice in our lives. It’s as if we’ve forgotten how god had carried us through the tragic episodes. And through our ignorance and neglect, we find ourselves so distant from him that dangers and perils which were once far away are now lurking ever so closely to us. Are we mindful of that?

Friends, do not let us walk far from Him. Do not for one second think that all accomplishments are attributed to our own diligence and charm. God has been there all along to bless us and impart to us the kind of blessings only He is able to.

Remember the miraculous consent you received from the authority? Remember the undeniable support you received from a friend you have forgotten? How about the outpouring love from your neighbour who went the extra mile to provide for you in the middle of your drought and famine? These are but just some of the easy life success that God has arranged for you. And so do not for one second forget God because He has us in His mind forever. Do not also let our footsteps come to the end like the people in Jeremiah 14 which when they pleaded, it was already too little too late.

I pray that you will remember Him all the days of your lives, more so when you’re having that jolly good time over coffee catching up with a long lost friend or for that matter a new acquaintance from work or church.

Spend some time with the Lord daily and you’ll see His provision of care and grace coming to you ever so gloriously. Let not the distractions of life overtake you but let your distractions be God so you’ll be consumed wholly by Him and in the same way, you in return consume all things godly from Him.

I pray that you’ll have a blessed week, in Jesus name, Amen!
